Snowshoe Hike UPDATE

Due to the recent thaw/freeze cycle, Woodland Park has lost most of it's snow and the trails that still have snow are very icy and not in good condition to be snowshoeing. With no significant snow in the forecast this week and needing time to notify volunteers and organizers, we will be postponing this event until Saturday February 2nd. We are hoping to do an ice skating/warming shelter event at the Winnequah Park lagoon instead on Saturday. Stay tuned for details.

This was a wonderful event last year.  I hope we have snow this year to make this another great event in the community...and a chance to experience one of our great parks.  More information about this park is here, including information about the park management (many people ask about the trees).

County Board Compensation...State over-reach?

State Rep. Joe Sanfelippo, R-West Allis, is offering a bill to put the board's (Milwaukee) salary and budget, both of which would be dramatically slashed, to a binding referendum.

This is an interesting concept...the state determining what and how a county structures and runs their board.  I was under the impression for so long that most Republicans believed local control over government.

I don't understand why we would think it is OK for the state to dictate how a county decides to form, and run their county board.  It the local folks don't like the way things are there is a simple way to make this change....elect folks to the board that support this change and will make this change formal.  This is another example of over-reach from the state into local issues (much like the handicapping of their budgets).

Will there be Hockey soon?

It looks like there is finally a deal in the works to get professional hockey back on track.  Although I miss having pro hockey, living in Monona - there is no close access to a professional team, and little local coverage.  See Link for more information on the deal.

Monona is open for skating on the lagoon!

Today it was official, the lagoon was cleared and the shelter was open from 11-4 with heat.  There was hot chocolate, popcorn and water for sale.  Please come down and enjoy some time on the ice.  Please also comment to the city about your appreciation of having this cleared and if you have additional interest in having a hockey rink and/or general skating rink flooded on the field by the shelter.  This could be open much sooner than the lagoon (its dangerous to have the public works folks on the ice with equipment too soon).
