Bike Safety Event

Maywood School Parking Lot, 902 Nichols Rd.

Sponsored by the Monona Police Department, Monona Grove School District, and Monona Grove Optimist Club, this annual event teaches young bikers safety, bike traffic laws, and riding skills.  Plus, it's a lot of FUN!
Kids will get a free bike check-up, and can get licenses for their bikes.
Parent, encourage your kids to attend with their bikes, or bring younger children along with you.  Adults are welcome to participate too; just bring your bike and helmet.
Starts right after school, 3:00-5:00 pm, in the parking lot of Maywood School, 902 Nichols Rd.   If it rains, the event will be held on Wednesday,  May 30, 3:00-5:00 pm.

It's the start of summer in my kids opinion...the pool is open.  Come out and check out the great pool we have here in Monona.

Dr. Susan Chon, associate professor in the Department of Dermatology at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, knows adults and teens alike benefit from the seasonal reminder to practice key skin cancer prevention strategies. A board certified dermatologist, Dr. Chon counsels healthy individuals daily on ways to reduce their skin cancer risk and is full of simple tips for healthy summer skin, including ones not typically known, like those below.

SPF 30 sunscreen applied incorrectly is actually SPF 20?

Dermatologists at M. D. Anderson always recommend sunscreens SPF 30 or higher, because they have found that the majority of people don't apply enough sunscreen. According to Dr. Chon, a SPF 30 sunscreen may provide significantly less protection when not enough is used. Don't know how much to use? Dr. Chon suggests following the American Academy of Dermatology recommendation: one ounce, enough to fill a shot glass, is considered the amount needed to cover the exposed areas of the body properly.

Protection from the sun's harmful rays is just a wash away?

For runners, people who work outdoors and others who are frequently outdoors, Dr. Chon recommends investing in clothing with built-in UVA blockers to provide an extra layer of protection. Many outdoor and sports clothing brands sell lightweight trendy gear that offer up to 50+ UPF (ultraviolet protection factor). Another good option is to wash clothes in a specialty detergent that boosts the UPF of your everyday clothes for up to 20 washes. Dr. Chon notes this great for parents who find it hard to keep constant tabs on their child's sunscreen habits during long summer days, and can be particularly useful when preparing for summer day and overnight camps.

Threats to pull out of the parade if politics are involved!

To me this seems out of line, to make a threat to pull out of the parade for the actions of a few...I don't think it's reasonable to think no one will be promoting politics.

Memorial Day Parade

The 57th Annual Monona Memorial Day Parade is this upcoming Monday.  This year This year Kathy Thomas  will be leading the Parade.  If you have not been out to this event in the past...you need to check it out, it's a wonderful event for all.

Monona Farmer's Market

The Monona Farmer's Market is open.  If you have not been to this event come check it out.  I have to admit that we are not frequent visitors due to the proximity (that's one big hill to bike back from - but I have found that if you take Broadway back to Bridge you can cut out the big hill - well that's the plan for this year)...and there always seems to be other things that need to get done on Sunday's (and not back from camping by the time it closes).  This year I will try to make it a point to get there more often.

The big item on the agenda is the Minimum Property Standards Ordinance.  This has been something that folks have been working on for some time.  I agreed with the decision of the past council to send this back to committee (despite all the work done) to address some issues that were problematic.  I hope we are able to address all the concerns next week and bring something to the council that can move forward.  Please review, attend and make a public statement of your opinions.

Mass Transit Meeting Monday at 6:30

Another transit meeting...still issues?
Although we have all been waiting for the new schedule, there continues to be delays in making it happen.  We were able to get additional hours of operation (without an increase in cost!), but we have some on-going issues on how to make these increased hours work for current riders (not changing their current times) , support our seniors and their needs, expand to the UW and VA hospitals while seeking to increase ridership.  That's one tough job.  If you have a vested interest please come out Monday to participate in the conversation.
